The Five Elements are Silently Responsive to all our reactions. We ignorant humans think them to be silent, therefore not responding.
They are silent observers of our every action. They work jointly with Law of Karma. According to Law of Karma, we bear the consequence of our misdeeds, after all the consequences of our good deeds are exhausted. Once that is is done, THERE IS NO ESCAPE We will have to suffer all that we made the person/animal/bird/reptile/any living being/trees/forests suffer. Just because we don't hear their pain, doesn't mean, they don't feel it. Torture against against the defenceless always boomerangs.
All the Five Elements are not outside of us. We are composed of them. Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Space are there in all of us. The moment soul enters these Five Elements, we get covered with impurities like ego, lust, malice, jealousy, etc.
