IS COPYING AN INFANT TO A FULLY GROWN-UP CORRUPT PERSON?
When in school and college, used to be shocked by the rampant copying. What shocked me even more was the invigilator turning a blind eye. Students seemed to be getting bolder. Invigilators turning milder and helpful. It seemed like a mockery of word "exam".
Ancient Indian Custom:
Once upon a time, in Bharatvarsha, law and order was built into each individual. Though, this was not important for livelihood, it was necessary to build a law abiding human being. When Ashtaanga Yoga was part of the education, the first two rungs, namely Yam and Niyam were required to be strictly adhered to.
Yam or Yamas are five doctrines, which every individual must strictly follow.
Ahimsa or non- violence, towards everyone, human or otherwise. This is said to send vibrations, such that even sworn enemies become friendly in the presence of such a person.
Satya speaking of truth, always. It is a noble, good and relations(trust) building practice. It is also said, that always speaking the truth, gives the tongue, such great miraculous powers that whatever such person prophesies has to come true. The environment works to make it true. It also means that the person must be truthful all the way.
Asteya-Anything which is not owned is not to be treated as owned. Not used or vandalised. It is to be left alone.
Brahmachaya Control towards desires and physical intimacy, gives vigour. It keeps the society clean. Just because someone dresses in a provocative manner, it is not an invitation to lose control.
Aparigraha- Non covetousness. To be content, with what one can honestly earn. Not compare with others and eye theirs. We get what we deserve. To get the best... deserve the best. Work honestly. It may take time but it will come.
Niyamas
Saucha, Santosha, Tapah, Svaadhyaaya and Ishwara Pranidhaana
Saucha-Cleanliness physical, mental, internal, environs(wherever we go)
Santosha-Contentment. To know our limits. When someone has something better...So what... I am happy with what I have. Will work harder. I am not in this competition.
Tapah: Will adhere to austerities, financial-unnecessary extravaganza, moral-not doing anything so as to harm any living being, social-not to turn a blind eye if I see anyone needing help. Being a human being, it is privilege to be of use.
Svaadhyaaya Following, practising, reading to become great individuals. Children observe elders and behave accordingly. Elders, therefore must not behave in such way, that it sets a bad example to their wards.
Ishwara Pranidhaana-All the good acts that are done, surrender to God. Own up where our action causes even a bit of misery to anyone. When we surrender all good/noble acts, God Gives the Reward after setting off all our negative acts of the past. He doesnt keep our good acts for Himself!
All these ten doctrines go to make a human take the path to divinity.
Yet, why do we see corruption?
When students resort to copying, they do so because they feel "no one is watching". What about their soul and The Omnipresent God? They grow up, start earning a living. The misconception intact, that, "no one is watching". Add one more misconception, "permanence". In the frenzy to be corrupt, the fact all this will be left behind, when the Final Call comes, is forgotten.
Is it because of the "over-confidence" that no one is watching? The argument is they are "not paid enough" to satisfy their greedy wants. When each one becomes aware of God Within, who is noting all our (mis)deeds will corruption still be around?
